Brace for the sneeze
Cold season is here, and if your back is already cranky, one sneeze can feel like getting kicked. The problem is the shape you sneeze in. Most people curl forward fast, chin to chest, back rounded. That quick fold is the exact move a sore back hates. So flip it. When you feel one coming: Stand or sit tall. If you're standing, soften your knees a little. Put a hand on a counter, desk, or your thigh so you're not hinging forward. Tighten your belly like you're about to get poked, then let the sneeze happen with your back straight or even leaning back a touch. Same deal with coughing fits and blowing your nose. Upright, braced, no curl. It feels weird the first few times. After a week it's automatic, and it saves you a lot of those sharp jolts. This is about not making a bad day worse. If a sneeze sends pain or numbness down your leg that doesn't settle, or you notice new weakness, get it looked at.
